Marco Polo

Marco Polo was born in 1254 in Venice. he was a Venetian merchant who travelled from Europe to Asia, staying in China for 17 years, which were described in 'il Milione' known as 'The Travels of Marco Polo'.

Marco Polo's path was marked by his ancestors, in particular his father and uncle. The family had traded with the Middle East for a long time, acquiring considerable wealth and prestige.

On his return to Venice, he was captured by the Genoese and imprisoned in 1298, then released in 1299.

In 1300 he married the patrician Donata Badoer by whom he had three daughters. 

In 1323 he was ill and unable to move from his bed, so in 1324 he died.
