Every year, a chess game with living pieces is played on the square in Marostica. Having settled the court, the Vallonata led by Cante and his son Vieri arrive on one side, and on the other side the Angarano, led by Count Rambaldo and his son Rinaldo.
According to tradition, it was by battling at chess that Rinaldo and Vieri, both pretenders to Lionora's hand, decided who should win and who should lose without using weapons as was customary to do.
